This character REALLY has my interest, and I have to wonder what he's after.
So...he creates a curse and gives it to the Evil Queen. He even tells her how to get it to work...but he also tells Snow White & Prince Charming how to break it. Then he tells the Evil Queen that he told Snow & Charming how to break the curse.
So what is his actual game? I don't think there's a lot to go on yet, but I DO suspect that, when it comes down to the Evil Queen/Emma showdown, that showdown will end up being just a piece in Rumpie's plan. (Yeah, how many times do YOU want to spell out that name?)

He's such a mix of contradictions, though he is definitely the puppet-master of the show. It's likely whatever his grand plan is, it's much bigger then just having the "good" fairy tale characters not have happy endings. In a way he's the reason Emma is in Storybrooke, because he's the one that gave Henry to the Regina.
Like his fairytale origins he is still in the baby procurement business, but I wonder to what end in this story.

I agree. Sana and I talked after the first episode, wondering how this show could have long-term, multi-season potential. Because in the first episode or two, it seems like once Emma breaks that curse, it's all done. And there's only so long they could drag THAT out. But with Rumpie being set up the way he is, I think this is where they're going to be able to open up into many more years of the show.
And Robert Carlyle is AWESOME in the role, I gotta say. His interaction with Regina just hit on so many more levels because of the skills the actors (both, really, but Robert Carlyle in particular in this instance) brought to the scene. That "please" just had so many layers.
Will refrain from making Smallville comparisons, as I do when I speak to Sana on the phone about these episodes. I'll save them for our joint reviews...which we hope to be putting together this week!

I think that if the curse is every broken, it wouldn't be a auto reboot of the characters to their fairy tale lives. Rumplestiltskin made the curse, but he also made the solution, that Snow White and Prince Charming's kid would break it, and I think he will have some kind of control over Emma. As the guard in the pilot said, if he knows your name he has power over you. Of all the babies in the world he could have procured for Regina, he got Henry, Emma's baby. For reasons unknown, I think he either wants the curse broken or alter to be even more in his favor. Perhaps if the curse is broken down the road, some hybrid world will be created.
I haven't seen Robert Carlyle's work before, except for a few clips from Stargate Universe. Though his portrayal is definitely creepy and menacing in it's layers.
Can't wait to see your joint reviews with Sana ;D

Anybody have any thoughts about what we're going to see in the Origin episode? There has been some speculation that we'll find out he used to be a good man, corrupted by the use of magic.
In which case...what magic deal did HE make to get THAT corrupted???
